FIELD FILE ISL / ROUTE 12

Iceland

Iceland’s fire-and-ice identity becomes a sequence of opposites: warm ground and glaciers, midnight light and winter dark, compact horses and expansive landscapes.

Cappy packed curiosity. The map is optional.

STORY DISPATCH#12

What happens on this route?

Expecting ice and penguins, Cappy instead finds a colorful harbor city and ground warm enough to breathe steam. Volcanoes, geothermal streets, an immense glacier, nesting puffins, a uniquely smooth horse gait, bright summer nights, and dark winter skies reveal a country of compatible opposites. When an Arctic fox draws him away from town lights, his final detour opens beneath an aurora he could never have seen from indoors.

Vatnajökull National Park contains volcanoes beneath ice, and eruptions can cause sudden glacial floods called jökulhlaups.
